To ensure your child achieves his or her maximum academic potential, schedule an evaluation with Psycho-Educational Associates, serving Totowa, Little Falls Township, Woodland Park and the surrounding areas in New Jersey.

What is the Purpose of an Educational Evaluation?

Some children have difficulty achieving their full academic potential. When this occurs, students, teachers, and parents usually want to understand what is causing the problem. Such children are often labeled as slackers or lazy; however, a student’s failure to apply herself or himself to school is sometimes caused by psychological factors or an an underlying learning disability.

When a learning disability is suspected, a comprehensive evaluation is needed to confirm those suspicions. A highly trained specialist must conduct a psychoeducational evaluation in order to effectively diagnose a learning disability. This testing will thoroughly explain the psychological and cognitive factors that might be affecting the student academically.

What is the Educational Evaluation Process?

An educational evaluation consists of several very intense tests that are usually given over a period of several days for best results. The testing generally begins with an intelligence exam. Next, a series of exams will be conducted to measure academic achievement. These achievement tests are intended to determine how well a student has mastered core academic subjects, including writing, math, and reading.

It is common for an educational evaluation to be accompanied by a psychological assessment to explore one’s mental abilities such as attention, memory, and executive functions. The results of the intelligence test are compared to the results of the achievement tests and psychological assessments. A disparity between the student’s intelligence and achievements may reveal the existence of a learning disability.

What Does a Finished Evaluation Look Like?

Each evaluation will be accompanied by a comprehensive written report that analyzes the findings of each specialist who conducted the testing. Each report will contain specific recommendations for helping the child and meeting their academic needs. The accumulation of data acquired through the testing process will be used to determine the presence of a learning disability, these results may shed light on a potential alternate cause of the student’s difficulty or diagnosis.

A well-conducted education evaluation gives the parents and the school information about the cognitive and psychological factors that may be affecting the student’s academic performance. The evaluation is never intended to stigmatize or punish the child. The goal of the evaluation is to help explain why the student has not been achieving his or her full potential and to suggest a strategy for helping the student.
