Substance Abuse Evaluation in Northern New Jersey

Substance abuse not only affects the abuser, but everyone around him or her. A substance abuse evaluation performed by Psycho-Educational Associates is the first step toward eliminating an addiction for New Jersey patients in Totowa, Woodland Park, and Little Falls Township.

What is Involved in the Evaluation?

At Psycho-Educational Associates we believe that Chemical Dependency is a chronic and progressive disease that manifests from a biopsychosocial etiology. The human psyche is an extremely complex system that is effected by a multitude of variables. Chemical Dependency develops when an individual chooses to use psychoactive substances and this use of substances evolves into patterns of habitual use that ends in moderate to severe consequences. The severity of consequences may destroy the person psychologically, socially, vocationally and, many times, results in death.

Our Substance Abuse Evaluations are conducted from a Biopsychosocial perspective. They require an in-depth, exploration of major factors that contribute to disruptions in overall healthy functioning and development, and variables that are attributed to Chemical Dependency. Genetic predisposition and biological risk factors, overall psychological state, development and health, accompanied with social development, culture, and experiences are considered in conducting each assessment.

At Psycho-Educational Associates we believe that best practices for substance abuse intervention and treatment is embedded in a therapeutic process that facilitates motivational change. It is our belief that when a safe and well structured environment is created, patients are more capable to interact more freely and have the ability to explore interpersonal issues and relationships more deeply.

One of the primary goals of the clinical staff at the Psycho-Educational Associates is to assist clients in maintaining abstinence of psychoactive chemicals, while helping them with the evocation and expression of raw affect to be transformed into healthy and productive behavioral responses. We offer a safe, supportive environment that consists of honest feedback to permit and promote effective reality testing. We believe that these are the therapeutic factors that contribute to genuine self exploration, healthy catharsis, and overall healthy psycho-social growth and development.

This IIC (Intensive In-Community) model is a model that is designed to specifically provide intervention services on an In Home basis in compliance with the structure developed by Perform Care to address behavioral issues with children. This model is semi-structured program that helps clients identify and address risk factors which may lead them to unhealthy behaviors such as substance abuse. It is designed as a teaching tool to educate and provide insightful information to help understand risks and resiliency factors. This model offers clients and their families’ education about the biopsychosocial risk factors of substance abuse. In addition, the the model teaches and encourages active participation in healthy, effective coping skills. This model is specifically designed for adolescents who have limited involvement with psycho-active chemicals, or those who are highly motivated, and capable, to maintain abstinence (at least intermittently) and engage in early intervention services as a component to a multifaceted intervention system.

Treatment for drug abuse or addiction ordinarily begins with an evaluation. Most evaluations take the form of both written and oral questions and answers. The evaluation operates as a framework to aid addiction disorder professionals in determining the specific needs of the patient.

The evaluation ordinarily begins with the patient completing a questionnaire. Next, the evaluator reviews it and inquires about the person’s responses. Some drug rehab facilities will base their evaluation on the information obtained from the written and oral questions and answers. Other facilities will pass the information on to a substance abuse specialist to formulate a tailored and individualized treatment plan for the patient.

What is the Purpose of the Evaluation?

The primary purposes of a substance abuse evaluation are to diagnose an addiction and formulate a treatment plan for it. If past or concurrent mental illness or abuse is revealed, that information might be considered in treating the addiction, or it might be treated along with the addiction as a co-occurring disorder.
