What are Learning Disabilities?

In the majority of cases, people who struggle with a learning disability demonstrate either average or better than average intelligence.

There frequently seems to be a disconnect between what a person can achieve and the achievements they actually make. For this reason, experts often call learning disabilities “hidden disabilities.” The individual appears normal in every other way, and is often considered to be extremely smart and clever. However, he or she is usually incapable of displaying the level of skill and cognitive functioning that is normally seen in others in the same age group.

Why Conduct Learning Disability Evaluations for Kids?

  • Your child’s teacher is worried about his or her lack of progress in class
  • Your child is receiving low scores on standardized tests, usually under the 15th percentile
  • Consistently poor marks on report cards, often Ds or Fs
  • Displaying behavioral problems while in school

What is a Learning Disability Assessment for Adults?

A learning disability assessment involves gathering pertinent information about a person’s various strengths and weaknesses in order to discover if they might have a learning disability. The steps of this process vary, but generally involve:

  • An evaluation (using formal tests to determine processing ability, achievement, and intelligence)
  • A screening (short tests, review of school, medical and job history, job interest assessments and an informal interview)
  • Diagnosis (declaring what the assessment revealed and the kind of learning disability present)
  • Recommendations (for everyday life, jobs or school)

  • Having considerable difficulties in school or at work that create barriers to achieving related goals
