What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, causes mood swings consisting of emotional highs, referred to as mania or hypomania, and extreme lows (depression). When you become depressed, you may experience feelings of deep sadness, and be uninterested in activities you once enjoyed. On the other end of the spectrum, you may be overly energetic and experience intense happiness. Mood changes may occur several times per week, or be present on just a few occasions during the course of a year.

While bipolar disorder is a continuing condition that can be disruptive, you can manage moods with a treatment plan. Bipolar disorder can typically be managed through a combination of medication, depending on the severity of the disorder and associated behaviors.

Bipolar and related disorders are classified in different ways. The symptoms of each type may vary depending on the person. Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorders have more specific features that may be included in the diagnosis, depending on the symptoms the patient exhibits.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar I disorder- You have experienced, at a minimum, one manic episode. The episode may have occurred either before or after hypo-manic or major depressive episodes.
  • Bipolar II disorder- You have had one or more major depressive episodes that continue for two weeks or longer, and at minimum, one hypomanic episode spanning at least four days, but never experienced a manic episode.
  • Cyclothymic disorder- You have endured multiple periods of hypomania symptoms for at least two years, a diagnostic standard that is reduced to one year in children and teenagers. Symptoms during this time are present at least half the time and persist for longer than two months.
  • Other types-These consist of, for instance, bipolar and related disorders caused by a different medical issue like Cushing’s disease, stroke or multiple sclerosis. Substance abuse and medication-induced bipolar and related disorder is another type.
